Snapping Shrimp
In all the salt-water recordings on this site, you will hear the ever-present snapping shrimp. At times, I became frustrated when trying to hear other sounds through the popping, snapping, crackling sound of these strange crustaceans. Who knew there was such a thing as Snapping Shrimp? I sure didn't until my brother-in-law, Steve, found them on the internet at the University of Rhode Island site (see link below). Snapping Shrimp are crustaceans, usually a muddy green color that are found in tropical and temperate waters. The shrimp will quickly close its large claw to stun its prey, producing a loud snap. When I was editing these recordings, I had to use a filter to tone down the sounds of the shrimp so other sounds could be heard. The combined sounds of large masses of snapping shrimp have been known to interfere with the sonar of naval vessels.
