KATYDIDS IN PISGAH NATIONAL FOREST, NORTH CAROLINA
KATYDIDS AND CRICKETS, PENROSE, NORTH CAROLINA, JULY, 2009.
The sounds of the katydids fill the nights here in Western North Carolina. Before moving here in 2004, I had not heard them except when we vacationed near Asheville, NC. Growing up in the mid-lands of South Carolina, I didn't hear them very often if at all. In 2009, they were late arriving to the area possibly due to the severe drought of the two previous years or the extremely cold winter of 2008-2009.
Katydids are usually seen, not heard because they tend to stay in the treetops where they feed on leaves. The live in forests, woods, thickets, and fields with lots of shrubs.
