Black Drum Fish
I recorded these sounds at approximately 10:30 pm on April 15, 2009 on Edisto Island, North Carolina. The tide was coming in and I dropped the hydrophone into the deep water of a lagoon. I had not heard the deep, bass sound during the day and later discovered that this fish is usually heard only at night. The Black Drum is usually found on the muddy bottoms of bays and lagoons and begins making its sounds for several hours after sunset. These fish produce very low frequency sounds which range from 60-1100 Hz. The call is usually produced by the male even though evidence suggests that the female may also call indicating a complex social structure.
